Tahsin recoiled in horror as Cem lifted his head—the man’s eyes were milk white. He looked around, then shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t care. I’ll find them when you’re dead.”
“When I’m—hey!” Tahsin scrambled away as Cem drew closer, lazily swiping his sword through the air. “Have you lost your wits?”
“No, I’ve gained them. It’s simple. I kill you, I become emperor.” He lunged and Tahsin dove to the side, rolling across the mossy ground, his fingers digging deep into the soft loam.
“What are you talking about?” he shrieked. “That makes no sense!”
Cem threw his head back and laughed. “I wouldn’t expect a worm like you to understand the complexities of political machinations. Now stand up, I don’t want my blade to dull itself on the dirt when I skewer you.”
Tahsin whipped a handful of dirt and moss into his face, then took off at a sprint. The forest was no longer quiet; it was now filled with the sounds of his own panted breath and Cem’s bellow of all-consuming–
