Especially fantasy. Why? Be it through comics, graphic novels, manga, anime, or movies—fantasy provides a mental escape.
The modern world is quickly spinning out of control. And, at the end of a long day, a dive into a fantastic story is often the only chance you’ll get to immerse yourself in another world, and for just a few precious moments, forget all the stress that comes with living on planet earth in the 21st century.
Maybe you're facing immense financial pressure. You may only have enough money to live two months at a time. Everything is changing so fast. Gas prices, food prices, rent prices—everything is insanely volatile, and that's affecting you mentally. You cut and cut, but it never seems to be enough.
Every supplier you've worked with in the past eight months has changed their prices at least a dozen times. Shipping costs are like watching the stock market. One shipping company changed their prices three times in one week. It's like you need seven accounts just to begin making everything work. You can't even price your services anymore.
Or, you might work at a demanding job–like a startup–and the culture there means you often have to wear multiple hats and handle responsibilities beyond your job scope. It's necessary for your career to grow, but it's still a major cause of stress.
By the end of the day, you're usually too exhausted to do things you want, like reading, watching something, or going to the gym. At work, it affects your productivity. You have a lot of pressure, and sometimes you can't do everything as well as you'd like. You might be a bit of a perfectionist, so the work feels incomplete when you can't do something the way you wanted.
When things feel incomplete, your reaction varies. Sometimes you get angry; sometimes you feel disappointed. Other times, you remind yourself you're doing your best. It depends on your mood and the situation.
Outside of work, your biggest responsibility and concern is taking care of your family—your spouse, children, and parents. You have to be there for everyone. Sometimes it's too much.
The biggest problem is that every day you wake up with the feeling that there's nothing you can do to change the situation, no matter how hard you work, plan, or try to save money.
So, the entertainment you consume needs to let you take a break from it all—or at the very least, not get in your way.
So, consuming it is anything but relaxing.
Every day, you’re already worried about acceptance in the world. You're afraid people will look at you differently than they do others. You notice that when people learn a bit more about you (that you’re a Muslim), it definitely changes things. It's troublesome. You never know who's accepting and who isn't. You don't really want to upset anyone, and you definitely don't want any anger directed at you or anyone associated with you.
You've tried solutions like talking to people and sharing your point of view, but it seems like they just don't listen to your side. They don't want to hear your opinion and thoughts.
So, you sit down at the end of a long hard day and open the latest comic offering by your favorite graphic artist. This is your one chance for a break from it all. Fiction, to you, is a way to feel inspired, and you even believe that one day, some of the things you read in these stories might actually become real. These few precious moments are priceless.
Page one immediately grabs your attention and pulls you into the story. You feel a beat of hope. On page two, you notice some nudity. Easy enough to ignore if you have good self-control, but an annoyance, nonetheless. On page three, you discover that the main characters are all transgender. You don't have any problem dealing with these topics in real life, but you’d rather not engage with them when you’re trying to relax. By page four, the content is purely 18+. Then, the icing on the cake . . . page five, and you see a Muslim portrayed in a bad light, which makes you feel like the script was written by Zionist artificial intelligence. . . . By now, you also know that the storyline is weak—something you’ve seen dozens of times before. You already know how this one will end.
So, you silently shut the book (vowing to throw it out as soon as you get up), lean your head against the back of the couch, and close your eyes. No escape tonight.
You feel like something unexpected needs to happen to get people to see the world the way you do. When you think about a solution, you imagine something new—like more interactive shows or immersive experiences that could really draw people in. You believe that someday, fiction will become reality—like how we can now see things people never thought possible centuries ago.
But, this solution needs to align with your values. Maybe someone could create a website or network that got rights from authors to delete unwanted parts—you know, a clean version of the anime or graphic novel? There might be something like that for movies, but for anime, you’ve never seen anything like it. And, “clean” versions of movies are often pirated, not legit, which comes with its own set of risks. These days, any programmer could inject apps with malware, viruses, or other malicious content. And you don't want to use a bunch of extra stuff just to make sure no one is tracking you, stealing your password, or accessing your webcam. That adds a whole other layer of stress.
For this to work, there needs to be a gathering of people supporting this clean version of everything, like anime or movies. It would likely be popular in the Islamic world because it's a most-wanted thing, especially these days. But, you would also need to find funding to create some network or site for this. That task sounds daunting. Just getting rights or permissions from the authors would be an enterprise in itself.
Instead, what if someone created exemplary media specifically free of haram content or LGBTQIA+ themes? The unique benefit of this approach? It would create a generation not exposed to this stuff. Their way of thinking would be clearer, not muddied by questions like, "Is it he, she, or they?" It's getting complicated.
The main benefit would be in creating a generation that lives simply, like people used to. They wouldn't be addicted to sexual content. This isn't just for Muslims—being addicted to porn or related content is harmful to anyone. It affects the brain's dopamine centers, impairing normal thinking and communication.
Without explicit content, you wouldn't worry about what you or your children watch. You wouldn't have to search every single piece of content or stay with them while they're watching. This benefits everyone.
Think about how different your life would look if you could truly disconnect from reality and engage with a reliable source of soul-strengthening entertainment every single day. If you arrive at work refreshed each morning, you can increase your productivity. This lightens your workload, makes you more profitable, provides greater financial stability, and gives you more time for the things that matter most to you.
What if it went a step further? What if you could use this source of entertainment to connect with other Muslims who share the same values? What if this space allowed you to offload stressors, discuss problems, and generate solutions?
Picture yourself at the end of a long day, settling into your favorite chair with a sense of anticipation. You open up the latest issue from Tales of Khayr, and within moments, you're transported to a world that respects your values and ignites your imagination.
You feel a surge of pride as you see powerful, positive Muslim characters leading the story.
Your mind expands with each turn of the page, exploring complex themes that challenge and inspire you.
You discover a community of like-minded individuals who share your passion for thoughtful, engaging entertainment.
Your children look up to new heroes who embody the virtues you want to instill in them.
This isn't just fantasy—it's the reality we're creating with Tales of Khayr. Are you ready to be part of this transformative journey?
Let me tell you about my improbable (but very real) journey to create Tales of Khayr.
When I was in high school, I read a story that, while I didn’t know it at the time, would eventually change my life. It was about Dracula. Not the Dracula you've seen in the movies or read, but the real story of Dracula. It all started when I read an article titled "How the Muslims Killed Dracula" by Shibli Zaman.
The article showed that the real story of Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) and his brother Radu has been distorted over time. Radu was a loyal Muslim and a key ally to Sultan Mehmet II, playing a crucial role in the conquest of Constantinople and battling Dracula's brutal reign. However, Radu's heroic contributions have been overshadowed by hyped-up tales of Dracula. Shibli called for a more accurate portrayal of these historical figures in Hollywood, criticizing crappy movies like Dracula Untold for making Dracula a tragic and noble hero and the Ottomans the bad guys.
Tales of Khayr is more than just a comic book company. It’s a community. A hub of exemplary storytelling coupled with outstanding graphics and a space to exchange ideas, have a friendly discussion, and find ways to better navigate Islam in the West.
Here, you find people who are facing the same life situations. By bringing ideas together, you don’t have to live in fear, and you can find the mental energy to pursue your goals.
And it occurred to me: why are there no stories involving Muslims? Why do they always make us the bad guys?
Someone ought to do something about this. And then I had a couple decades of great success in tech—as many of us do, and then I realized—hey, it’s time to do something about it.
I did some research (because that's one of the skills I've gotten quite good at) and decided that I wanted to write a novel...but precious few of the younger people in my community read novels anymore.
And I'm not going to go out and make a movie quite yet (or maybe ever)—but manga, comic books—I know people who would like a story like that. And of course, I went to the Emerald City Comic Con and skulked around until I found leads to some people who could create great comic book art.
This is why I created the Brotherhood of the Wolf—a unique comic book series that fills this storytelling gap. And I've found that creating compelling stories ultimately boils down to one thing: authenticity.
To achieve this, we use what I call the 5 Pillars of Authentic Storytelling—grouped for easy recall as M.A.G.I.C.
M
Our stories feature Muslim characters in leading roles, portrayed realistically and positively.
A
We ground our tales in captivating historical periods often overlooked in Western media, like the Reconquista and Ottoman Wars.
G
Our dark fantasy adventures keep readers on the edge of their seats while exploring deep themes.
I
We enrich our stories with regional folklore, arcane cults, and secret societies.
C
Our comics appeal to everyone interested in a never-before-seen Islamicate setting.
Prepare yourself for a journey that will challenge your mind and ignite your soul. Our first epic tale is just the beginning:
From jinns to ancient cults, our dark world is steeped in forgotten lore. Will you decipher the clues that shape each character's fate?

Betray your country or your comrades? There are no easy choices here. What would you do when there's no clear path?
King Wladislaw's betrayal isn't just history—it's the spark that ignites our powder keg of dark magic and human treachery. In our world, the past is always present—and always deadly.
Forged in the fires of tragedy, bound by a pact to honor the fallen. Will you join their ranks in the fight against an insidious cult?
Witness an alchemist's quest for the Philosopher's Stone spiral into darkness. Will his pursuit save humanity or doom us all?
Munir's quest goes beyond gold—it touches the essence of life and death. But some truths are too dangerous to know. Are you prepared for mind-shattering revelations?
Experience battles that test the soul as much as the sword. This isn't just action—it's a crucible where heroes are forged.
Watch broken men transform into unlikely heroes. In this world, inner demons rival the monsters without. Who will you become when faced with the impossible?
In a world where fear feeds monsters, one man's terror threatens everyone. Can Tahsin overcome his cowardice before it's too late?
At Tales of Khayr, we believe that stories have the power to change lives. Our first saga, set against the backdrop of the Ottoman Wars, will take you on a journey of:
Immerse yourself in a rich, historically inspired narrative that celebrates Islamic culture and heritage, featuring heroes like Koja and Cem.

Brotherhood of the Wolf: The Lesser Evil by Ezra LC and Wes Al-Dhaher is a graphic fantasy novel combining prose storytelling with silent comic art. Set in Constantinople, where a powerful Christian ideology reigns, it envisions the restoration of the Ottoman kingdom over the Balkans. This commanding introduction promises riveting, multifaceted reading with diverse characters and format.
Nikephoros grows into his powers and political destiny in the 15th century, navigating fear, pain, and a vanished fellow adventurer in an inky black darkness where ancient carvings portend danger. The fantasy, horror, and historical backdrop attract readers of these genres.
Half the story is in prose, half in black-and-white graphic art by Aurelio Mazzarra, encouraging readers to think about evolving events. With its alluring premise and unexpected situations, Brotherhood of the Wolf: The Lesser Evil is easy to pick up and hard to put down—a winner for graphic novel readers.

Brotherhood of the Wolf: The Lesser Evil is a dark and compelling tale of political intrigue, familial secrets, and supernatural forces. Nikephoros, a young noble of Constantinople, navigates a city on the brink of chaos, confronting sinister undercurrents that blur the line between protection and malevolence. Through shadowed tunnels, whispered conspiracies, and a chilling supernatural twist, the book captivates and unsettles.
Ezra LC and Wes Al-Dhaher craft an enthralling atmosphere. Constantinople comes alive with bustling streets, fragrant markets, and lingering history. Nikephoros’s harrowing encounter in the tunnels is spine-tingling. Polychronia is a standout—her layered role as a loving mother harboring dark secrets is masterfully portrayed. The eerie descriptions of the “tall, slender figure” and unsettling rituals kept me hooked.
A thrilling read that blends historical realism with supernatural horror, Brotherhood of the Wolf: The Lesser Evil is an unforgettable tale of protection, love, and justified evils.

Brotherhood of the Wolf: The Lesser Evil is a dark and mesmerizing blend of historical fiction, political intrigue, and supernatural horror. Set in 15th-century Constantinople, it explores the thin line between faith and fear, nobility and corruption, heroism and horror.
Nikephoros, a young noble, is drawn into a shadowy underworld where enemies may not only be foreign invaders but inhuman horrors lurking beneath the streets. A reckless friendship leads to a hidden chamber, eerie symbols, and an unseen force that devours his friend. Meanwhile, his mother, Polychronia, shifts between loving caregiver and ominous figure, embodying themes of moral compromise and hidden truths.
The horror elements, including a shadowy creature and the realization that his family may be linked to the horrors beneath Constantinople, add psychological depth. A brilliant fusion of historical fiction and supernatural horror, Brotherhood of the Wolf is immersive, chilling, and hard to put down.

Brotherhood of the Wolf: The Lesser Evil offers vivid action, heroes, and gruesome monsters. The novel presents storytelling in dual forms: prose set in 15th-century Constantinople and a graphic novel.
Nikephoros, a 14-year-old hoping to achieve the rank of “archon,” follows his friend Adam into a tunnel hidden at the end of an alley. What they find defies explanation. Rumors of monsters seem to find credence as Adam disappears in the dark. Nikephoros escapes but faces questions and fears. His investigations lead to his own mother, Polychronia, forcing him to confront supernatural phenomena tied to his family.
The black-and-white artwork is beautifully rendered, with gladiatorial combat that leaps off the page. The difficulty is in connecting the two portions. While this installment offers much promise in terms of storytelling and artwork, it lacks the cohesion to make the work fully satisfying as a whole.

In a turbulent 15th-century Constantinople, Nikephoros, a young noble, has terrifying encounters with the city’s shadowy elite. The Byzantine Empire’s independence is “hanging from a thread,” while a secret group, The City of the Angel, seeks “to ensure Christian dominance… at any cost.” Rumors swirl of “people being sucked into the earth,” and Nikephoros’ nightmares of a “slender, too-tall figure” become reality when he follows his friend Adam into a hidden tunnel, leading to tragedy. Suspecting his mother, Polychronia, of involvement, Nikephoros soon finds himself forced into gladiatorial combat for the sinister Fausta.
Mazzarra’s grayscale illustrations add “layers of visceral emotion,” depicting haunting imagery, but the lack of captions risks losing some of the story’s intricacies. Despite this, the novella “clearly values the storytelling power of words and images equally,” creating “an offbeat and often compelling pairing of plot and illustration.”

The horror novella Brotherhood of the Wolf glimpses into a world of concealed, ancient dangers. In fifteenth-century Constantinople, Nikephoros lives a life of relative ease. His only struggle is the overbearing nature of his mother, Polychronia. Nikephoros’s perceptions of his home and the people in it are shattered when he encounters a mysterious, sinister entity in the tunnels beneath the city.
In its second half, the book switches to a wordless comic format. He battles a mutated woman for the entertainment of a monstrous crowd. The prose is unflinching and direct. Vivid locations—including dark, winding subterranean tunnels and bustling marketplaces—flesh the book’s world out further.
The illustrations are striking, but the lack of text deprives the comic of a clear, traceable narrative. Still, Brotherhood of the Wolf is an ambitious horror novella in which a mother and son face a strange, malevolent entity, learning that evil is often nearer than it seems.

In fifteenth-century Constantinople, teenager Nikephoros dreams of joining the military and becoming an archon. His mother, Polychronia, supports his ambitions but disapproves of his mischievous friend Adam. When Adam leads Nikephoros into a hidden underground tunnel, everything goes wrong. Later, only one teen emerges, injured and in shock, while whispers of people "sucked into the earth" and "bodies drained entirely of blood" linger.
The novella takes a unique turn, shifting from strong prose to wordless, rapid-fire illustrations. While Mazzarra's artwork depicting gladiatorial combat attended by vampires and ghouls is striking, the transition from text to imagery feels abrupt—almost like two different stories stitched together. Despite this, readers seeking an ephemeral horror tale will find plenty to marvel at and wince over. Brotherhood of The Wolf: The Lesser Evil delivers eerie suspense but struggles with its experimental structure

Young lord Nikephoros lives a pampered life in Constantinople, training to be an archon, while his commoner friend Adam is free from such burdens. When Adam persuades him to explore the rumored underground tunnels, their lives are changed forever. The historical details make the setting feel authentic, with a shadowy group ensuring Christian dominance and rumors of people vanishing into the earth.
Nikephoros’ mother, Polychronia, is shrouded in mystery—harboring secrets and lying about her ties to the enigmatic Fausta. Her actions prove she isn’t to be trusted. The story takes a unique approach, presenting the first half as a written narrative before shifting to stark black-and-white illustrations by Aurelio Mazzara, guiding readers through the wordless conclusion.
Brotherhood of the Wolf: The Lesser Evil is a fresh take on the graphic novella, offering multi-layered characters, richly detailed illustrations, and a unique storytelling format that stands apart.
